A portfolio for nursing educator John Wu, RN — fifteen years at the bedside, now at the front of the classroom — designed, filmed and built end to end. This is the story of its design: why the site opens on film, why the page is dark, why the cursor glows, and why it has a pulse.
✦The Film
Before a word is read, the site shows you where John works. The hero film follows him through his environment, and it carries the case for everything that follows: the knowledge he has earned shows up the way it does on shift — as quickness and calmness, the capacity to carry stressful, complicated tasks through an emergency while never letting go of the person in his care. Composure is what expertise looks like.
✦The Penlight
The first tool a nurse reaches for is a penlight — checking a patient's pupils, the first gesture of care. So the cursor became one. A warm beam follows your hand across every page, shining on whatever you attend to. Attention, made visible.
✦The Dark
The site lives in darkness on purpose. In the room, nurses and doctors are the light — and the same beam that greets a visitor lights the way for John's nursing students, moving through his teaching pages with their study lit one passage at a time. The light enlightens.
✦The Pulse
John's monogram is drawn from the heart mid-beat — kindness, made visible at the center of his identity.
And the site beats too. Rest a fingertip over the phone's rear camera and the page listens, drawing your real heartbeat live on screen. It stands for what John does — keeping every soul healthy and well, yours included — and it is deliberately playful: an interaction his clients and students can play with. Care, made hands-on. A demonstration, not a medical device — but every beat it draws is yours.
